First Presbyterian Church has had three buildings, shown at left is the building occupied from 1843 to 1876. Located at the corner of Third and Washington
Streets, facing Washington, this was the First Presbyterian Church that the
Abraham Lincoln family attended (Pew 20) from 1850 to 1861.
The church was erected in 1839 and torn down some thirty years later. The fall 1839 special session of the legislature, met in the Second Presbyterian Church, Springfield, IL. Abraham Lincoln was a Whig representative attending the 1840 session in this church. He also delivered an address before the Washingtonian Temperance Society, on Washington's birthday, in 1842 at Second Presbyterian.
