Memoir Writing Class 1: How to Find Your Voice and Write Strong Characters

Turn your memories into narrative with this writing course that is suitable for beginners and experienced writers alike. We will read excerpts from some of the best memoirists in the 20th century, then use their texts as guides to help us write strong characters, structure a cohesive plot, add emotional resonance and demonstrate character growth and change.

All classes meet in the (air-conditioned!) library at the Presbyterian Heritage Center.

About the instructor: Shelby Wardlaw is a writer, teacher, and translator from Austin, Texas. She holds an M.F.A. in Fiction from Columbia University and currently teaches in the Writing Program at Rutgers University. Her fiction, non-fiction and Russian poetry translations have appeared in literary journals such as Drafthorse, Interim, Northwest Review, Philadelphia Stories, the Vassar Review, and others. She has won numerous prizes for her fiction, and her stories have been nominated for a Pushcart Prize and inclusion in the Best American Short Stories Anthology.
